We accelerate competence by making learning personal.
Most organisations invest heavily in training.
Few can prove it builds actual capability.
The gap between completion and competence is where performance is lost.
The Pilsdonpen Approach
L&D doesn't have a spending problem.
It has a design problem.
Most learning is built for delivery, not for retention. Designed around content, not capability. Measured by attendance, not ability.
Pilsdonpen's Athelion™ is built differently; from the gap backward, from the individual outward, from competence forward.
- Fixed curricula assigned to entire cohorts
- Completion rates reported as proof of impact
- Gaps identified after performance fails
- Learning ends when the course ends
- Personalisation traded away for scale
- Adaptive paths shaped by each individual's gaps
- Verified competence reported to leadership
- Gaps diagnosed before learning is designed
- Learning restructures as capability develops
- Personalisation that holds at any scale
Built on 40 years of learning science.
Delivered at any scale.
Pilsdonpen's Athelion is grounded in the science of how knowledge is structured, how memory works, and how competency actually closes.
Most diagnostics ask what someone knows. Pilsdonpen maps the entire knowledge structure of a domain: the relationships between concepts, the dependencies, the valid paths to mastery. Built on Knowledge Space Theory (Doignon & Falmagne, 1985), the Capability Diagnostic doesn't produce a score. It produces a precise picture of where each individual stands within a complex competency landscape, and exactly what needs to close next.
The learning assigned to close each gap isn't pulled from a content library and scheduled, it's sequenced according to how human memory actually works. Cognitive load theory to prevent overload, spaced repetition to lock in retention, retrieval practice to convert knowledge into performance. Solid instructional design isn't a feature. It's the architecture every piece of content is built on.
The path doesn't personalise once at the start and stay fixed. As each learner moves - closing gaps, revealing new ones, responding to content - the Pilsdonpen Algorithm updates their competency model in real time. The system continuously recalculates the optimal next step. Personalisation isn't a setting. It's a live, ongoing process that holds across ten learners or ten thousand.
Designed for content
vs. designed for mastery
The research is clear.
Two high-stakes capability domains. The same systemic failure. And a growing body of evidence showing what precision learning actually changes.
Everyone completes the safety course. Nobody can prove who's actually competent.
In Energy and Aviation, safety training is delivered by cohort: same content, same schedule, regardless of what each person already knows. Completion certificates are issued. Competency is assumed. The exposure hides in the gap between the two.
of aviation and energy safety incidents involve human error, not equipment failure
ICAO / IOGP safety data
of corporate training programs fail to meet their intended learning objectives
McKinsey & Company
We pinpoint exactly who has the gap before the risk becomes an incident.
The Pilsdonpen Capability Diagnostic maps each individual's safety competency against their specific role requirements. Training is deployed only where real gaps exist, producing faster readiness, fewer wasted hours, and a defensible record of verified competence.
increase in training efficiency when organisations shift from fixed-path to adaptive, competency-based delivery
AI in Learning research, 2025–2026
Built on Knowledge Space Theory (Doignon & Falmagne, 1985) — the mathematical framework that enables precise, adaptive assessment of individual competency states without over-testing or over-training.
Soft skills training is the most delivered, and the least retained, investment in L&D.
Leadership, communication, and collaboration programs are rolled out to entire teams on fixed schedules. Engagement is low. The Ebbinghaus forgetting curve is working against every cohort-based program that lacks spaced reinforcement and personalisation.

We make soft skills as diagnostically precise and as measurably effective as any technical capability.
Every behavioural competency in the Pilsdonpen Capability Model™ is mapped, individually assessed, and precisely targeted. Spaced reinforcement and adaptive sequencing ensure what's learned is retained and applied, not forgotten by the end of the week.

Grounded in learning psychology. Spaced repetition, retrieval practice, and cognitive load theory, combined with evidence-based instructional design to ensure transfer from learning to real-world performance.
Our pledge
Built on a belief that learning changes lives
We commit 10% of net profit to organisations that improve access to education for children in the regions where we work and beyond. We are actively identifying partners whose values and rigour match ours. Because closing knowledge gaps shouldn't stop at the office door.
